Better Futures is a welcoming support service for adults aged 18 and over who have a learning disability and/or autism. Founded more than 30 years ago, we provide a safe, friendly space where people can connect with others, build confidence and access practical support at their own pace.
We offer information, advice, groups, workshops and activities that help people develop everyday skills, strengthen independence and feel more connected to their community.
Our social hub gives members a calm and supportive place to meet friends, use computers, talk with staff and volunteers, and take part in activities that support wellbeing and reduce isolation.
We recognise that everyone’s experiences, needs and goals are different. Our approach is compassionate, respectful and person-centred, helping members make choices that feel right for them.

What We Provide
A social hub
Better Futures offers a relaxed and supportive environment where members can spend time with others, develop friendships and feel a sense of belonging.
Members are encouraged, but never pressured, to take part in activities and build relationships that may continue outside Better Futures.
Digital access and support
We provide support to use laptops, tablets, mobile phones, digital cameras and free internet access. Members can learn basic IT skills, get help to use the internet and social media safely, and receive support with online forms such as housing or job applications.
Health and wellbeing
Our health and wellbeing activities help members explore healthier choices in a positive and supportive way. Sessions may include healthy eating, movement, relaxation, safety awareness and information from Better Futures staff and health professionals.
- Optional weigh-ins and goal setting for members who want support with weight management or exercise.
- Yoga, mindfulness and wellbeing sessions to help reduce stress and support relaxation.
- Information sessions on road safety, fire safety, crime reporting, prevention and personal safety.
- A Healthy Living Club, funded by Livewell Southwest Foundation, designed for adults with a learning disability who would like support to improve their health and wellbeing.
Volunteering and work
We work with a range of organisations to support members who would like to explore volunteering or work opportunities. This can include help to look for opportunities, write CVs, complete application forms and build work-related skills such as communication, confidence, numeracy and literacy.
Social activities
We organise social activities throughout the year, including events such as a Christmas party, summer BBQ and disco.
These events give members the chance to enjoy time together in safe, accessible community settings, with staff support available.
Information and advice
Staff and volunteers are available to listen and offer practical support with everyday questions and concerns. This may include bus timetables, cinema listings, relationships, letters and bills, benefits information, finding things to do locally, and referrals to other organisations.
Skills for everyday life
Our workshops, groups and activities support members to build confidence, self-esteem and independent living skills. Activities may include cookery, basic literacy, money skills, arts and crafts, health information, relaxation and other groups shaped around members’ interests.
Members can also take part in an annual needs assessment, where they choose the areas they would most like support with and set goals that matter to them.
This helps staff understand what each person wants to work towards and how best to support their progress.
Activities and Support for Families, Carers and Professionals
