Braille Tuition
At our Resource Centre we offer Braille tuition, the tactile writing system that is used by people who are blind or visually impaired. Students learn to develop their use of touch to ‘read’ a series of dots written on embossed paper. They may also progress to writing Braille.
In addition, our team offer ‘Skills for Seeing’ (Eccentric Viewing) instruction. These sessions aim to help those with sight loss (particularly those with Macular Degeneration) use their remaining vision more effectively. We are pleased to be able to offer this training under the auspices of the Macular Society.

Insight Course
This is a four week course (one day a week) for people with sight impairment or severe sight impairment. The programme introduces people with sight impairment to the local and national support available to help them adjust to living with sight loss and move forward with their lives.
The course provides:
- An opportunity to meet and share your experiences with others in a similar position
- Advice on managing your reduced vision, getting around, leisure and independence, daily living, equipment and much more
- Valuable information on services, groups, benefits and funding that are potentially available to help you
- An opportunity to put your questions to Low Vision Specialists, Rehabilitation Officers and other key people.
Insight courses are held at 156 Mannamead Road, PL3 5QL. Courses are FREE with refreshments and a light buffet lunch provided. Transport can be arranged; albeit, we appreciate a donation towards your transport costs.
Training And Consultancy
Sensory Solutions offers awareness training in Sensory Impairment for business, employers, organisations or individuals.
Such training includes techniques to communicate effectively with Deaf/Hard of Hearing people and assist severely sight impaired / sight impaired people to access services and support. This training is fun and informative and can be designed to suit the requirements of the organisation.
Participants will gain:
- An understanding of hearing and/or sight Impairment
- Knowledge of the life impacts of sensory loss
- An appreciation of how to include and communicate with people who have Sensory Impairment
- Awareness of the equipment or support services available.
We can also provide advice on other issues relating to sensory impairment.
